Member Spotlight: Anders Juul Recognized for EDC Research

Anders Juul_127x190Anders Juul, MD, PhD,  a leading researcher of the effects of endocrine-disrupting hormones (EDCs) on child development, received  a prestigious ESPE Research Award from the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology today during the 54th Annual ESPE conference in Barcelona.

Juul is being recognized for his scientific leadership in the field of pediatric endocrinology. The award is for Juul’s breakthrough studies on the effects of hormones and EDCs on child growth and puberty, and causes of increasing male infertility. This is the first time a Danish researcher has received the award.

Juul is chair of Endocrine Disruption of Male Reproduction and Child Health (EDMaRC) and Head of the University Department of Growth and Reproduction at Rigshospitalet, Denmark. Among his most notable contributions to the field is the establishment of the international research centre EDMaRC, a centre focusing on educating and researching in endocrine disruption of male reproduction and child health.

“Anders Juul truly deserves this award; he has pushed the level of research in the challenging domain of endocrine disruptors. This is a huge benefit for public health,” says Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, MD, University of Liège, Belgium. “It is no coincidence that such an achievement takes place in Denmark with the important activities at the Department of Growth and Reproduction in Rigshospitalet and recent launch of EDMaRC. This international research center is a pivotal initiative at the forefront of science and public health in Denmark and many other collaborating countries.”

The ESPE Research Award recognizes research achievements of outstanding quality in the fields of basic endocrine science or of clinical pediatric endocrinology. The prize is awarded through selection by the Andrea Prader Committee.
