As a member of the “Yellow Berets,” I was able to serve my country while staying
stateside rather than heading to Vietnam. In this 1968 U.S. Public Health
Service photo of the staff of the National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic
Diseases (as it was then known), I’m in the third row, second from the left, and
joined by two fellow Yellow Berets who would later go on to win Nobel Prizes:
Harold Varmus (top row, third from left) and Mike Brown (second row, second
from left). PHOTO COURTESY OF ROBERT J. LEFKOWITZ
