Joins Research Community to Rally for Medical Research
The Endocrine Society continues to fight to increase funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and will join with the broader research community to rally for medical research.
On September 17, the Society will bring several of its member researchers to Washington, D.C., to participate in a Hill Day with hundreds of other research organizations, professional societies, and patient advocacy groups to urge Congress to support increasing research funding in the final appropriations legislation.
The Rally for Medical Research Hill Day is in its fourteenth year and has had tremendous impact on influencing increased funding by bringing the broad research community together with a single request. This year, we are asking for $51.3 billion for the NIH.
The Rally for Medical Research gives us a timely opportunity to remind Congress about the value of the NIH funding, the need to pass a CR by September 30, and the importance of providing an increase.
Congress is required to complete all funding bills before the start of the federal fiscal year on October 1, or the government will shut down. This year, the House of Representatives and Senate recognized that they were not going to make the deadline, so each chamber passed a short-term funding bill, known as a Continuing Resolution (CR), to keep the government running until December. This would allow the House and Senate to complete a final appropriations bill during a “lame duck” session in November after the midterm elections. As Congress returned to Washington, D.C., in September, it still needed to reconcile the different versions of the CR.
The Rally for Medical Research gives us a timely opportunity to remind Congress about the value of the NIH funding, the need to pass a CR by September 30, and the importance of providing an increase.
