The Endocrine Society is urging Congress to act on two important issues affecting diabetes research and care before the end of the year.
We are asking Congress to reauthorize the Special Diabetes Program (SDP). SDP is a critical program that provides funding for type 1 diabetes research at National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and funding for type 2 diabetes prevention and education programs for American Indian and Alaska Natives at the Indian Health Service (IHS). Funding for SDP expires on December 31 and Congress must act to reauthorize the Program or its research and treatment programs will come to a halt.

We are also asking Congress to pass the INSULIN Act, which is bipartisan legislation that would make insulin more affordable. The INSULIN Act would expand the $35 monthly insulin co-pay cap, which is currently available to Medicare beneficiaries, to the private insurance market. This bill would also provide resources to help people who are uninsured access affordable insulin. The Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee approved the bill in July, but the full Senate and the House of Representatives have not voted on it yet. The Society has launched an online advocacy campaign for members to contact their members of Congress and urge them to address these two important issues.
Please join our campaign today and ask your Representative and Senators to act on these diabetes priorities. You can participate in the campaign by visiting: endocrine.org/advocacy/take-action. All U.S. representatives and senators need to hear from their constituents to make this a priority.
