The reason for the failure of the first uterus transplant last month was due to a fungal infection that affected the blood supply, according to TIME magazine.
The infection was caused by Candida albicans, most commonly the culprit in yeast infections. Andreas Tzakis, MD, the program director of the transplant center at the Cleveland Clinic, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that it doesn’t usually cause uterine infections but the combination of immune-suppressing drugs and the invasive surgery were contributing factors.
