Certain Thyroid Tumor No Longer Considered Cancer

When is thyroid cancer not thyroid cancer?

When a prestigious international panel of doctors decides that it’s not cancer.

According to a story reported in today’s New York Times, this new reclassification will affect about 10,000 of 65,000 thyroid cancer patients in the U.S. alone. This decision and the science behind it was reported Thursday in JAMA Onocology.

The tumor — a small lump in the thyroid that is completely surrounded by fibrous tissue — was previously referred to as “encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma” but will now be called “noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features” NIFTP.
