Thirty endocrinologists from around the world learned about pathways to leadership roles during the Society’s successful inaugural Global Leadership Academy.
“The Endocrine Society is committed to developing the next generation of global leaders in endocrine research and practice,” says Endocrine Society President Lynnette K. Nieman, MD. “The Global Leadership Academy serves as the vehicle to help us accomplish that goal and allows us to cultivate new leaders and create a community network to support their growth and development.”
Launched at ENDO 2017, the Global Leadership Academy was created to provide formal professional leadership training for early career endocrine scientists and practitioners so that they can be leaders in their field, their institutions and within the Endocrine Society. Often, this specific cohort are not provided with this training, which is essential to strengthening their leadership capacity and professional development.
“The Global Leadership Academy serves as the vehicle to help us accomplish that goal and allows us to cultivate new leaders and create a community network to support their growth and development.”
Made possible by the generous support of Sanofi Peru, the inaugural program targeted professionals who have completed five to 10 years of professional training. The Academy’s goal is to create a network of leaders, known as “endocrine ambassadors,” who can share their knowledge with their peers and raise the visibility of the profession worldwide. “The limited access to such integral initiatives in Peru inspired our company to play a role in launching the first Endocrine Society Global Leadership Academy,” explained Cecilia Medina, M.D., medical director for Sanofi Peru.
Approximately half of the participants in this inaugural Global Leadership Academy were from Peru, and the rest hailed from Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Myanmar, Serbia and the United States. Most had never attended ENDO, the world’s premier event for presenting and learning about the latest advances in endocrine science and medicine.
The Society will hold the Global Leadership Academy next year at the centennial ENDO meeting. Next year’s goal is to increase the number of participants and the countries represented. ENDO 2018 will be held March 17–20, 2018, at McCormick Place West in Chicago, Ill.
